Memorials To Our EARS Friends
That Have Passed.
When our animals reach the end of their days, their remains are interred in an area preserved as a memorial cemetery specifically for that purpose. The cemetery attempts to provide markers for each one of those animals who now have peace and freedom to run uncaged as they should have been allowed on this earth.
SAMPSON
I got the opportunity back in April of 2008 to raise a baby tiger that came into the sanctuary. Under Gail Bowen's tutorage we brought him home. I knew my life would change having a newborn in the house but I never knew just how much. Of course there were the feedings every 2 -3 hours around the clock for months, of which I never had to set the alarm clock, he was my child from the beginning. Having no human children by choice, animals have always been where my heart was.
It was obvious from early on Sampson had health problems, I truly believe if he were with most anyone else he would have never lived as long as he did. I was willing to give up all my time, my home, and money to help him have a quality of life that he deserved.
I remember six months before Sampson passed away, one doctor told me I should put him to sleep. I promptly brought Sampson home and the next day the same doctor called me. I told him that I would no sooner tell him to put their ill human child to sleep, so do NOT tell me to put mine to sleep. I was willing to do whatever it took to keep Sampson comfortable and loved and I was determined to find a doctor who was willing to help me do just that. Needless to say, I never spoke to that doctor again.
Sampson lived 18 months in my home; he never ate from a bowl always from my hand. He was totally dependant on me. I was his mom. My husband, David, was Dad. Dad & Sampson played rough and hard, while Mom got all the kisses and hugs! We all had our place in his heart and he in ours. Since that horrible day November 5, 2009, our hearts have had a huge hole in them unable to be filled by any other in the way Sampson filled our hearts.
If I had to do it over again and could choose a tiger that was healthy and would live a long life or Sampson, who would only be in our lives for a short 18 months, I would choose Sampson. He needed us, but I think we needed him even more. Until I see him again at the Rainbow Bridge, he will be missed. A day never goes by without thinking of him, missing him and shedding another tear for him.

OLLIE
Ollie was such a plucky, sweet little fennec fox. We miss him very much. (2011)
SABER
The month of February, 2011 was a month of much sadness for the sanctuary. The month of February has always remained a time of sadness for me, as my only sibling perished as a result of the war in Vietnam, on February 20, 1970. My beloved brother "Buddy" was also a lover of animals, and he shall forever remain in my heart. It breaks my heart to inform all of you that precious Saber has passed on to a better place. Saber was a majestic lion who deserves all of the respect we can muster. His passing completely broke our hearts. His veterinarian was present during his passing. Hopefully, my next posting will be filled with hope and happiness, and news of wonderful happenings for the animals of the sanctuary.

CLYDE

Clyde & Tammy
Clyde was the most amazing vervet monkey you could ever hope to meet. From the moment that he first arrived at EARS, he quickly won the hearts of everyone, staff and visitors alike. When you looked into those gorgeous soft brown eyes of his, you could see a depth of soul that only the wisest of creatures could possess.....
Clyde was an elderly gentleman when he arrived at EARS, and parts of his fingers and tail were missing. We never knew what happened to him prior to his arrival, but we guessed that he had gotten into terrible fights with some of the other monkeys with whom he was living. This did not stop Clyde from maintaining his dignity and gentleness of spirit. When he looked at you so kindly with his beautiful eyes, you knew you were looking at someone as wise as the world’s greatest philosopher.Whenever he was offered a treat, or even his regular nutritious diet, he would often pause to look right into your eyes as if to say “Thank you. I appreciate this.”This you know he meant from the bottom of his heart.
One of his favorite activities was grooming the humans that stopped by to visit his enclosure, whether it be EARS staff or visitors to the sanctuary.Anything from searching through your hair to picking at a seam on your clothing would please him greatly. He was so intent on his work, and would make adorable little noises with his mouth as he went about his business. He became affectionately known as “The Tailor”, because he was so meticulous about making sure every seam on your outfit was perfectly groomed and looking its best. This was just another way for Clyde to show his gratitude and affection.
Despite all he had been through in the past, he was a happy, gentle monkey that no one could resist falling in love with. We at EARS consider it a great honor to have been able to care for Clyde during the last several years of his life. In him we found an excellent teacher of how to live life with grace and gentle dignity.
We love you Clyde.Your spirit is now in the wind, running free and enjoying the freedom that all the animals at EARS who have gone before you are now enjoying. You are not gone my friend. You will live in the hearts of all who came to know you forever.

SADIE
Sadie was an exceptional dog. When EARS would take in an already pregnant tiger, Sadie considered it her duty to be a back-up "Mama" to the babies. She recently passed away (2011). We miss her very much.
MONIQUE
MONIQUE (January, 2010): We had a passing here the day before yesterday. Monique, one of the girl vervets (monkey) passed away. It was like a child dying, and it was horrible. Two staff members refused to remove her little body from her habitat. They, and I too are devastated. I entered the enclosure, and I wrapped her lifeless little body in a beautiful blanket. I took her to the veterinarian to have a necropsy performed. The result of the necropsy is acute liver failure. Monique is still at the veterinary clinic, but I plan to get her tomorrow, so we can have a burial here at the EARS cemetery. This is the first primate to have died at EARS. I am saddened beyond words. Monique was confiscated from an unlicensed person, and placed here by FFWCC. Of course I feel as if I failed her, even though she showed no signs of distress prior to her passing. All the days leading up to her death, she ate well, and she seemed in good spirits. I have no idea as to her age, however I know for sure she was very old. I suppose it was her time to go. (No Photo Available)
SIERRA
SIERRA was, without doubt, among the most memorable big cat to have found a home at EARS. She was loving, playful, and so very needy of a permanent home. Sierra arrived at the sanctuary in December, 2000, along with her two brothers Saber and Sebastian. They were only three months old at the time of their arrival. The three of them were
introduced to Zhiva, a tiger who was approximately their same age. Sierra,
Saber, Sebastian and Zhiva lived peacefully together in their habitat which encompasses one acre, for the next two years. As the foursome neared sexual maturity, the two girls Sierra and Zhiva were moved together into a magnificent habitat where they lived in harmony for the next six years. Sadly Sierra developed an incurable cancer which took her from us. She now rests peacefully in the EARS' cemetery. Sierra will forever remain in our hearts.
BUDDHA
HAUS
Haus was placed at the EARS sanctuary by a family in North Carolina, which no longer wanted the responsibility of owning two tigers. EARS happily accepted Haus & his sister, Tabby. Sadly, Haus passed away a few years ago...and our hearts were completely broken when our precious Haus departed this earth. I personally held Haus in my arms, when he passed. He is now resting peacefully in the EARS' cemetery. (No Photo Available)

WE DON'T EVEN KNOW YOUR NAMES...
In loving memory of the many animals that were killed in Ohio. Words can't bring you back, but they can help us not forget what happened to you at the hands of our own species. Words can't right the injustices done to you, but perhaps they can prevent such injustices from happening again through new laws, so you won't have died in vain. We pray your spirits are resting peacefully now, in a better place.
